A different type of nursing

THE BROWN NURSES
MAKING A DIFFERENCE SINCE 1913

We are an independent, nurse-led, professional community nursing organisation.
We provide practical care to all who seek help, without judgement or discrimination.
We work for a world where every person in disadvantaged circumstances can lead better lives.

How we help

We provide in-home care, comfort and support to disadvantaged and marginalised people in inner city Sydney. Many of our clients live with debilitating chronic illnesses and are at risk of homelessness. Being in the care of the Brown Nurses can offer them a chance to maintain their independence and remain connected to their local community.

Our professional nursing care is person-centred, compassionate and driven by a sense of purpose.

“The cause of a person’s poverty is not yours to question.
The fact a person is poor is the reason you help.”

A unique Sydney organisation

Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor was founded in Sydney by a young Australian woman, Eileen O’Connor, considered by many to be a saint-in-waiting, and Father Edward (Ted) McGrath of the Society of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.

Today, our professional nursing service continues her tradition of offering person centred healthcare to all those experiencing hardship, loss and isolation with hope and compassion.
